Condition monitoring / machinery protection system (CMS) P&ID symbol

Condition monitoring / machinery protection system (CMS)

ISA 5.1-2009/2022 (general instrument and function symbols) / API 670
Drawn as
A rectangle labelled CMS (or MPS, VMS), or the letters CMS written beside vibration and bearing-temperature alarm functions.
Meaning
The machinery protection and condition monitoring system: an API 670 rack that receives the VE / ZE / bearing TE signals, raises alarms and trips (often voted 1oo2 or 2oo2), and passes trends to analysis software. Not physical on the P&ID; in a twin the rack sits in an equipment-room system-cabinet.
Variants
  • Some legends draw it as a DCS-style square with the CMS tag
  • The machine trip from the CMS usually goes to the motor MCC or the SIS
Not physical hardware. Read it, then skip it in the 3D model.
