Voltage transformer (VT)
IEC 60617 (single-line diagram symbols)
Drawn as
Two small overlapping circles (like a power transformer, but smaller), on a fused tap from the busbar, with the secondary earthed.
Meaning
Steps down voltage for metering, protection and synchronising. Inside a switchboard it is part of switchgear. A free-standing outdoor VT/CVT becomes instrument-transformer. Don't confuse it with a power transformer (bigger, in the main feeder path).
Variants
- ANSI legends call it a PT (potential transformer)
